Biographical

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on November 13, 1850. He was the only child of Thomas Stevenson, a civil engineer, and Margaret Isabella Balfour Stevenson. Stevenson's father was a successful engineer, and he designed many lighthouses and other structures around the coast of Scotland.

Stevenson's mother was a devout Christian, and she raised her son in a strict religious environment. Stevenson was a sickly child, and he spent much of his childhood in bed. He was often tutored by his mother, and he developed a love of reading and writing at an early age.

In 1867, Stevenson began studying engineering at the University of Edinburgh. However, he soon realized that he was not interested in engineering, and he switched to studying law. He graduated from law school in 1875, but he never practiced law.
