Robert Graves was one of the most important and influential poets of the 20th century. He is best known for his war poetry, which he wrote during his service in World War I. Early Life and Education
Graves was born in Wimbledon, England, on July 24, 1895. His father was a schoolmaster, and his mother was a writer. Graves was educated at Charterhouse School, where he began writing poetry and met some of his lifelong friends, including Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen.
In 1914, Graves volunteered for the British Army and served in France during World War I. He was wounded several times, and he was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.
War Poetry
Graves's war poetry is some of the most powerful and moving ever written. In his poems, he expresses the horrors of war and the emotional toll it takes on soldiers. He also writes about the camaraderie and friendship that can be found in the midst of war.

Later Life and Work
After the war, Graves continued to write poetry. He also wrote novels, short stories, and essays. He worked as a professor and lecturer, and he was a founding member of the Inklings, a literary discussion group that included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
Graves died in Deyá, Majorca, on December 7, 1985. He is buried in the churchyard of St Peter's Church in the village.
